When is the next UK travel announcement?

The UK’s travel policy is currently reviewed every three weeks, with the last update being last Thursday, on November 25.

This means the next one could be expected on December 16.

However, with the fast-changing rules surrounding the Omicron variant, travel changes could be enforced ahead of this date.

Normally, there is no formal announcement but any changes previously have been detailed on Transport Secretary Grant Shapps’ social media accounts.

Are there any countries on the red list?

The government has added 10 countries back onto the red list, with the new rules back in place.

Last week, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed that six countries were to be added to the red list.

South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini and Namibia were added last week.

He said in a statement: “6 countries including South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Eswatini & Namibia added to UK’s red list following early detection of the new B.1.1.529 variant abroad.

And on Sunday, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola were also added.

Sajid Javid said: “We will do all we can to protect the UK public against this emerging threat and that is why we are surging testing capacity to the impacted communities and introducing travel restrictions on a further four countries: Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola.”

However, the government has made it clear that the red list was still in place even if there were no countries on it.

What are the current travel rules?

Brits returning from a red list country will have to pre-book a quarantine hotel to self-isolate for 10 days.

This costs £2,285 per person – an additional person pays £1,430, while kids cost £325.

New rules in place from today have also seen the return of the day two PCR test when returning to the country from a holiday abroad.

All arrivals must self-isolate for two days, while taking a PCR test on or before day two, with lateral flows no longer accepted.

Only if the result is positive can travellers leave self-isolation – if it is positive, then a mandatory 10 day quarantine must be followed.

Unvaxxed Brits must still pay for a day eight test and quarantine for 10 days when returning to the UK.

The new rules could be reassessed on December 16
