‘We sent out thousands of handmade dresses to girls in Africa and Syria – now we’re teaching them the skills to make their own’
A dress-making charity group in West London has been sending out handmade clothing to underprivileged children in Africa and are now teaching them to make the clothes themselves.
The group has provided over a thousand dresses to children in countries such as Ghana and Zimbabwe and are now hoping to provide these children with the skills they need to make their own clothing.
Click Rukiga started back in May 2021 when Jacqui, from dress a Girl around the World, contacted fellow volunteer expert Sarah and they brought both their charities together.

Sarah’s charity, Serving Our Superheroes, had, at the time, been providing school uniforms and clothes to families who had been struggling financially due to Covid and furlough.
Jacqui had been working with charities in Africa and together they came together to focus on dressing underprivileged girls throughout the world.
So far, the partnership has sent over 1,500 dresses to various third world countries in the last year including Syria, Ghana and Zimbabwe, they have also provided for NHS key workers and refugees.
On behalf of Click Rukiga Sarah and Jaqui said: “Dresses are simple and easy to make and will last a long time, due to the simple and adjustable design.
“By giving them (underprivileged girls) the resources and appropriate skills, it is allowing them to be sustainable and make dresses for many years to come.
“The dresses are more than just dresses, they are life skills; and they give hope and provide opportunities for girls to go to school and to have dignity.
“Third world countries have been particularly affected by Covid as poverty is very severe, there isn’t the same medical support, or the same numbers of people being vaccinated, so the loss of life is greater.
“Many family members have lost the main earner and with strict lockdowns still in place in many countries, the women can’t sell items at the markets. So providing dresses and masks really is essential.”
