On the same day Tim Paine stepped away from cricket for the foreseeable future, his wife has issued a message to his successor.

Tim Paine’s wife has given the man who will take over her husband’s position as captain of the Australian cricket team a glowing endorsement.

On Friday, Pat Cummins was officially unveiled as Australia’s 47th Test captain, becoming the first fast bowler to captain Australia since Ray Lindwall more than 60 years ago.

The 28-year-old has been elevated from the vice-captaincy after Paine sensationally quit as captain when his sexting scandal became public last week.

Former skipper Steve Smith has also been named vice-captain, completing his redemption story after he was suspended for a year as a result of the Cape Town ball tampering scandal.

“I am honoured to accept this role ahead of what will be a massive Ashes summer,” Cummins said in a statement.

“I hope I can provide the same leadership Tim (Paine) has given the group in the past few years.

On Friday afternoon, Bonnie Paine shared a post to her Instagram story featuring that quote from Cummins after it had been confirmed he would be taking over from Paine.

Bonnie shared the post to her account, writing: “@patcummins30 two of your biggest supporters here”, accompanied with a heart emoji.

The heat has been on both Paine and Cricket Australia all week and the wicketkeeper dropped a bombshell on Friday morning by stepping down from all cricket, putting his Test future in doubt.

Earlier this week, news.com.au readers made their voices clear in a poll, with 45 per cent of over 100,000 readers believing Smith should take the reins, compared to 34 per cent in favour of Cummins.

Speaking to reporters after his appointment as skipper, Cummins said Paine’s decision to relinquish the captaincy was a credit to his selfless leadership skills.

“When I spoke to (Paine) this morning, he wanted to make it really clear that part of his decision of taking a break was that he didn’t want (the sexting scandal) to be a distraction,” he said.

“That’s probably another tick for his leadership and how highly he thinks of the team.”

Cummins and Steve Smith, who returns to a leadership role as vice-captain, said Paine had lost none of the admiration of his peers.

“We really feel for Tim and his family. He’s just a really loved, well-respected leader of our team,” Cummins said.

“We love him. We hope that we see him back in the team soon and we just wish him all the best.

“He’s obviously going through a tough time.”

Cummins said his time as Paine’s deputy had left him in good stead to take the reins.

“He’s been incredible for me, especially since being vice-captain” he said.

“I feel like I’m really well-equipped. I’ve had a good few years of training.
