Tiger Woods new video gives hope for a return soon

Tiger Woods was cautious about committing to a comeback during his press conference in the Bahamas this week — or whether a return to the PGA Tour would extend beyond “a round here or there” — but a video posted on this week provided hope that Woods has continued to progress toward his first golf tournament back after a harrowing one-car accident in February.

The PGA Tour Twitter account posted a 23-second video on Wednesday that showed Woods taking two shots, with a golf cart and tipped-over bucket of balls next to him. He watched the follow through on his first shot, and then pulled another ball out of the bucket and lined up his second shot.

The video was captioned, “Full swing Woods.”

“I’ll put it to you this way: As far as playing at the Tour level, I don’t know when that’s going to happen,” Woods said in a Nov. 30 press conference, his first public appearance since the crash. “Now, I’ll play a round here or there, a little hit-and-giggle. That’s something that for a while there it didn’t look like I was going to. Now I’m able to participate in the sport of golf. Now, to what level, I do not know that.”

Eleven days prior, Woods tweeted a three-second video off of his personal account where he took a shot with an iron, a bucket of balls at his side and a sleeve on his right leg. The video — posted about a year after his last round of golf at the 2020 Masters and 11 months after he competed at the PNC Championship with his son, Charlie — was accompanied by a “Making progress” caption, and it prompted Phil Mickelson to reply that “it’s great to see Tiger swinging a golf club again.”

But the latest video served as concrete evidence that his latest comeback has progressed. Golfweek reported on Nov. 25 that the PNC Championship, scheduled for Dec. 18-19, was holding one of its two unannounced spots for Woods in case he was able to play with Charlie again. And if Woods needed assistance to avoid an endurance issue, he could ride a golf chart to his shots and avoid walking while playing off of Charlie’s drives, his friend Notah Begay said.

The Hero World Challenge, which Woods hosts, teed off Thursday at Albany Golf Club in the Bahamas, and three players — Rory McIlroy, Daniel Berger and Abraham Ancer — sharing the lead at 6-under after the first round.
