When Heather Jenkinson’s daughter Eva said she was worried Santa wouldn’t be able to get into their house without a fireplace, the single mum got creative.

Heather, 34, spent just over a tenner on her DIY project for the living room and is so happy with her handiwork that she’s going to keep it up all year round.

She said: ‘As Eva is five now, this year she had been into Christmas more and asking about how Santa was going to get into our house.

‘The previous years we have had a magic key that we hung outside the front door, however, when I went to get it I couldn’t find it, so Eva began to get upset and was wondering how Santa would get in.’

Balancing the project with childcare meant it took two weeks to complete, with Heather, from Oldham in Manchester, drawing around her phone onto cardboard and cutting out the shapes to make the bricks, which she says was ‘the hardest part’.

She then spent £5 on off-white emulsion for the brickwork and £8 on very dark brown spray paint for the mantelpiece.

Heather Jenkinson / CATERS NEWS (PICTURED Heather's daughter Eva infront of the finished fireplace) A creative mum who made a stunning fireplace for just over a tenner after her worried daughter thought Santa wouldn't get in without one, is so impressed with the results she plans to keep it all year round. Heather Jenkinson, 34, used nothing but five cardboard boxes, some glue sticks and a bit of paint to create the gorgeous cream fireplace and now her five-year-old daughter, Eva, can sleep easy on Christmas Eve and even has somewhere to hang her stocking. The thrifty single mum spent around two weeks on the fireplace and simply drew around her phone before cutting out the shapes to create over 50 single bricks for a more realistic finish. Heather, who used to work in a pre-school but is now studying IT, spent ??5 on emulsion for the brickwork and ??8 on spray paint for the mantlepiece. SEE CATERS COPY

‘I had some boxes in the attic and sourced some from a friend’s workplace and set about making one,’ she explained.

‘I had no clue where to start, but I had a picture in my head of how I wanted it to be.’

Heather, who used to work in a pre-school but is now studying IT, also added a garland for decoration – using a swimming noodle wrapped in tinsel and decorated with baubles, pine cones and flowers from her Christmas tree.

‘Eva was really excited when she saw it finished and was jumping around the room,’ she recalled.

‘Seeing her face so happy was magical and made it all worthwhile.

‘It will always be a Christmas to remember now when mummy made a fireplace for Santa.

‘I wasn’t planning on keeping it up all year however, I am so happy with how it turned out and feel it gives the front room a more cosy feel, so I will be keeping it up all year now.’
