When it comes to baby names, we draw inspiration from everywhere.

It could be from our favourite TV show, or a character in a book – but some parents are looking out the window to their own back gardens.

The UK’s love of plants throughout lockdown has been inspiring mums and dads all over the country, as research from online garden centre Primrose has revealed.

The research analysed ONS baby name data over the year of 2020 to decipher how the pandemic’s favourite green-fingered hobby affected our lockdown baby names.

Primrose’s gardening expert, Evie Lane, says: ‘Over the last few years, our love for gardening and plants has grown dramatically. Online searches show that since 2010, the demand for gardening and plants has risen every year.

‘In fact, searches for plants increased by a huge 900% in April 2020 during our first lockdown.

‘While the demand this year isn’t as high as in lockdown, plants are still very much on trend, with Google searches increasing by 560% in the last decade.

‘The trend is very likely to have influenced our baby name choices, as we associate gardening with growing new life. Plus, plants are very beautiful to look at, so of course you would want to give your baby an equally beautiful name.

‘House plants are proving to be very popular still, with a 944% increase in online searches since 2010. Maybe our 2021 and 2022 babies will be named Aloe or Peace Lily.’

Lily and Poppy top the list for girls, with Rose, Willow and Violet also making the top-ten.

Boys names were more inspired by gardens and nature than individual plants, with Rowan and Robin topping the list, and Bay, Forrest and Wren also featuring.

The research also found that parents are more likely to name baby girls after plants than boys. The most popular boy name in Primrose’s research is inspired by the Rowan tree, a fairly small plant growing vibrant red berries towards the end of summer.

The UK’s kitchen herb garden hobby also inspired a few choices in the last year, with 20 baby boys named Basil.
