The Queen’s grandson who infuriated the royal family after he accepted £500k deal for behind the scenes wedding photos
It is widely thought that Peter Phillips is The Queen’s favourite grandchild, so you would imagine that there is nothing he could do wrong in her eyes.
But on the occasion of his wedding to Canadian Autumn Kelly in 2008, Peter managed to infuriate his grandmother and many other members of his family when he secured a staggering £500k deal for photographs of his reception.
The scandal led to Her Majesty banning senior members of the Royal Family from featuring in celebrity magazine photograph deals.

Peter and Autumn Phillips married at St George’s Chapel, Windsor on May 17, 2008 in front of an estimated 300 guests. It would later become the same location where the likes of Princess Eugenie and Prince Harry would marry.
While the wedding was comparatively simple to the nuptials of Peter’s royal cousins, a great deal more was known about the private reception thanks to a £500k deal with Hello! Magazine.
The magazine ran a 100-page special with 59 pages of photographs from the wedding, 10 of which featured The Queen.

When the reality of the photographs came to light, it is said that members of the Royal Family were furious as they thought they were posing for an official wedding photographer.
Royal expert Simon Vigar gave an insight into the famous wedding during a documentary appearance. He said: “Generally what happens in the private do’s, there are no cameras there, or none of our camera’s there.
“So what happened at Peter and Autumn’s wedding is controversial and unusual. It went down like a lead balloon with many members of the Royal Family.”
At the time, The Telegraph went on to report that Her Majesty had not been consulted about the magazine deal. A royal source told the newspaper: “It will never happen again. In hindsight it should never have happened in the first place.”
It is said that the royals – who included the likes of Prince Harry and his then girlfriend Chelsy Davy, as well as Catherine Middleton- were unaware that there were four credited photographers and a reporter present.
A reporter for The Mirror told Channel 5: “The junior royals were at a wedding ceremony which is supposed to be private – the most private the royals are ever in, inside their own home, for goodness sake.
“They thought this was just photographers at a wedding and happily posed and grinned away, and then were quite amazed a couple of weeks afterwards to see a Hello! Supplement dedicated entirely to things they thought were private family shots.”
In early 2020, Peter and Autumn Phillips announced that they had separated and would be filing for divorce. It was understood that the couple would still live near each other in Gloucestershire and raise their two children as normally as possibly.
Their divorce was finalised on June 14, 2021 and a statement released on their behalf read: “Mr Peter Phillips and Mrs Autumn Phillips are pleased to be able to report that the financial aspects of their divorce have been resolved through agreement, the terms of which have been approved and ordered by the High Court today.
“Whilst this is a sad day for Peter and Autumn, they continue to put the wellbeing and upbringing of their wonderful daughters Savannah and Isla first and foremost.”
It continued: “Both Peter and Autumn are pleased to have resolved matters amicably with the children firmly at the forefront of those thoughts and decisions. Peter & Autumn have requested privacy and consideration for their children as the family adapts to a new chapter in their lives.”
