Royal Family: The secret code the Queen has with her handbag

0

The Queen is rarely seen without her handbag but contrary to popular belief it’s not just an accessory. It’s actually a way for Her Majesty to signal to those around her how she’s feeling in any given situation.

When attending a social engagement or function, the Queen uses her bag to give a subtle sign that she is ready to leave a conversation or exit an event, according to royal historian Hugo Vickers. It’s more of a secret signal than an accessory.

British Heritage reported that there are three distinct signs the Queen will use when at an event. And while two involve her handbag, the third secret sign involves her wedding ring.

When she moves her handbag from one hand to the other, it means Her Majesty is ready to end her current conversation. And if she places her bag on a table, it means she wants to leave whatever event she’s at in the next five minutes. And there’s one more signal according to Newsweek who reported author and royal commentator Kristen Meinzer saying: “If you’re with the Queen and she moves her bag, not from one arm to the other and not to a table, but if she sets it on the floor—that’s it. The conversation’s over and a lady-in-waiting or someone else will come to the rescue.”

But the most important signal of all involves her wedding ring. If the Queen starts twisting her wedding ring, it means she wants to exit her current conversation immediately, according to British Heritage. But though she supposedly uses these signals regularly, Kristen said other protocols don’t bother the Queen as much: “From her point of view, she’s so dedicated to service that I don’t think she would ever let any kind of royal rule or piece of royal etiquette get in the way of what is a diplomatic charm offensive on behalf of the British government.”
