Repeal of our draconian Covid rules comes not a minute too soon

BORIS Johnson introduced the most draconian crackdown on our personal freedom at the height of the Covid lockdown.

The emergency legislation even banned adults from sex with people from other households.

So the news that the Prime Minister is repealing many of the pandemic prohibitions comes not a minute too soon.

The Government will no longer have the power to shut schools or nightclubs.

But if Britain is to get back fully on its feet, this must only be the beginning.

The rules which force double-jabbed holidaymakers to take a costly barrage of tests must be relaxed.

The main winners from the current set-up is the testing companies allowed to fleece us.

The roll-back of regulations must be accompanied by moves to get Britons back to the office.

Our city centres, commercial hubs and high streets are still far too empty, putting a brake on the recovery.

With massive tax hikes like the social care levy just around the corner, turbo-charging the economy could hardly be more urgent.

The PM urgently needs to boost growth to generate the billions of pounds he is lavishing on health and social care.

His National Insurance raid on jobs and pay packets is a gamble that will be slightly easier to absorb if the economy is booming once again.

BoJo must get the country properly back to work without delay.

Desperate measures

PEOPLE-traffickers are plumbing new depths to keep their evil trade afloat, by arming migrants with pepper spray to use against the French cops trying to stop them.

It is bad enough that they cram terrified migrants into rickety inflatables to cross the Channel for up to 20,000 euros a head.

Priti Patel has faced flak for her plans to use armoured jet skis to intercept and turn back dinghies in the Channel.

But given the tactics the smugglers are prepared to stoop to, the Home Secretary must be given all the powers she needs.

And she is absolutely right to back the Border Force staff in the front line of the fight against the trade in human misery.

The Ron and only

IT was like he had never been away.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice on his triumphant return to Old Trafford, confounding sceptics who thought at 36 he might no longer be able to handle the frantic rigours of the Premier League.

But you know what they say, the old Rons are the best…
