Michael Carrick says Raphael Varane’s injury rehab is ‘going really well’ but he isn’t fit to feature against Arsenal on Thursday night.

The Frenchman hasn’t played since limping off with a hamstring injury in the 2-2 draw against Atalanta at the start of November.

Varane had initially been ruled out for a month and while caretaker boss Carrick says he won’t play against the Gunners or Crystal Palace on Sunday, he does hope the central defender will be back playing later this month.

‘Yeah, Rapha’s rehab is going really well,’ Carrick said.

‘He’s out on the grass but it won’t be any time this week, by any stretch, it’ll be a little bit further than that, if not even longer.

‘He’s on course [though], which is good.’

Harry Maguire, meanwhile, is back in contention having missed Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea through suspension with one of Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly expected to make way.

This will be Carrick’s final match in charge before handing over the reins to interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The German is expected to be in the stands for the match as Carrick revealed he is yet to speak with the new boss.

‘I haven’t really got anything to update you on, other than the process of getting the work permit visa is ongoing and coming through now as we speak,’ Carrick said.

‘I’m in the position I was for Villarreal and Chelsea, getting the boys ready for the game tomorrow night.

‘No [I’ve not spoken to him], it’s pretty much as it was with the both games we’ve been to. Because of the process and the work permit, we haven’t been able to, so we’ve carried on as we have done.

‘It’s worked well for the last two games and hopefully it will as well tomorrow.’
