Best Heisman Trophy odds

The favourite: C.J. Stroud (+175)

Stroud finished fourth in last year’s Heisman voting, and is the current favourite to take home the trophy this season.

It’s hard to argue against Stroud being a viable candidate. After a redshirt season, he won the job as Ohio State’s starting quarterback, where he thrived for the Buckeyes. Take a look at the video game-like numbers he put up in his freshman season:

Player CMP% YDS TD INT QBR
C.J. Stroud 71.9% 4,435 44 6 91.6

Stroud’s QBR of 91.6 was the best mark in the nation while his 44 touchdowns ranked third among all quarterbacks. He had seven games with four-plus TD passes, and ended his season with an all-time Rose Bowl performance.

The freshman threw for 573 yards and six touchdowns in The Granddaddy of Them All, leading Ohio State back from a 14-point deficit to win. He’ll still have Jaxon Smith-Njiba as his number one target, who is just one of many weapons in the Buckeyes’ arsenal.

If you had to detract from Stroud’s Heisman case it would be how one-dimensional his role was in the Buckeyes’ offence. The 20-year-old rushed for negative yards in 2021, mainly due to sacks, and had zero rushing touchdowns.

In an era of dual-threat quarterbacks, Stroud has been a pure passer. That being said, he’s the best passer in the country.

Other Heisman choices

Best value: Caleb Williams (+750)

Williams has the third-shortest odds of any player, so at first glance, you may not associate that with value. However, we believe the USC quarterback is on the cusp of a historic season.

He replaced Spencer Rattler halfway through the Red River Showdown, and never looked back. Williams threw for 212 yards in that game, rushed for 88 more, and was involved in three touchdowns — fuelling an epic comeback against the Texas Longhorns.

Using that game as the starting point, Williams threw for 1,810 yards and 21 touchdowns while rushing for 381 yards and five TDs — in just eight contests.

After emerging as one of the top quarterbacks in college football, Williams garnered national attention for his move to USC with Lincoln Riley. The duo both left Oklahoma following the 2021 season and look to usher in a new era of Trojan football.

Riley has surrounded the young quarterback with elite talent, and if you want to bet based on a coaching system, this would be it — two different quarterbacks have won the Heisman trophy under Riley in the last five years.

Player to watch: Bijan Robinson (+2,000)

A running back hasn’t won the Heisman since Derrick Henry 2015, but Robinson seems to be cut from the same cloth.

He officially took control of the Texas Longhorns backfield last season, and seized that opportunity. Robinson rushed for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns in 10 games while only fumbling the ball twice on 195 attempts. The running back also caught 26 receptions for 295 yards and four touchdowns.

Robinson rushed for 100-plus yards in six of the first seven games, which included a 216-yard clinic against TCU. He has proven to be a big-game player — and with the emergence of Quinn Ewers as Texas’ quarterback, there’s a chance he could be one of the best players on one of the best teams.

If Texas is back, and that’s a big if, Robinson will have the narrative working in his favour. At 20-to-1 this is definitely a name to keep an eye on.
