NHL All-Star Skills Competition odds: Alex Ovechkin is likely to make an impact

The NHL All-Star Skills Competition will take place on Friday at FLA Live Arena, the home of the Florida Panthers.

The latest: Many of the league’s biggest names will be participating in the various events, with Alex Ovechkin looking like a possible standout due to his decision to take part in the hardest shot and breakaway competitions.

Accuracy Shooting odds

Notes: This is a tough one to gauge because no one in the field has won this event before, and it’s tough to figure out based on statistics.

McDavid makes sense as a favourite based on his otherworldly skill set — and for what it’s worth he has the league’s best wrist shot accuracy rating in EA Sports’ NHL 23 video game. That’s something. It’s not much, but it’s something.

Breakaway Challenge odds

Notes: The odds here suggest that there’s no heavy favourite, but the Ovechkin/Crosby combo is intriguing.

The Russian sniper dominated this event when it first arrived, winning the first three editions from 2008 to 2010. He’s a natural showman, but it would be hard to say the same for Crosby.

NHL All-Star Skills Competition: Fastest Skater odds

Notes: Larkin is a worthy favourite as the only player in the field who’s won this event before. Not only did he win in 2016, but he also set the skills competition record at 13.172 seconds.

It’s been a while since then, though, and Makar outperformed Larkin last year. It’s worth noting that neither of them managed a top-four finish in 2022, so there’s plenty of room for an underdog to win.

Hardest Shot odds

Notes: Because Shea Weber and Zdeno Chara dominated this event for so many years, there aren’t many other players with a track record of winning it.

Ovechkin secured a victory in 2018 with a 101.2 mph shot, but Petterson is the favourite as he blasted the second-hardest shot by a forward in the event’s history back in 2020 (102.4 mph).

Tendy Tandem odds

Notes: There is no way to predict with confidence what will happen in this brand-new event that has plenty of chaotic variables ranging from goalies’ shooting accuracy to the participation of five women from Team Canada and Team USA.

The Metropolitan Division is likely favoured due to Igor Shesterkin and Ilya Sorokin’s combined brilliance, but it’s impossible to know which goaltenders will thrive under these unusual circumstances.
