Newcastle threaten Ralf Rangnick transfer plans as Jose Mourinho keen on Manchester United teen – Renuka Odedra

Welcome to the United On My Mind daily round-up, where we take a look at some of the best Manchester United stories you might have missed.

Jose Mourinho is still keen on a United youngster who impressed him during his time in charge at Old Trafford.

Barcelona continue to be linked with players in Manchester and their latest target is at United.

Meanwhile, United are in the market for a new defensive midfielder and this could bring them into conflict with Monday night foes Newcastle United.

Mourinho interested in United’s Wellens

According to The Sun, Mourinho is interested in Charlie Wellens. The Portuguese tactician reportedly wants to bring the 19-year-old midfielder to Roma after being impressed with him while managing United.

The youngster was brought into first-team training by Mourinho, who also wanted to sign him at Tottenham during his subsequent stint in north London.

Should Roma test the water with United, it doesn’t look like it will be an easy deal to complete. Their Serie A counterparts Inter showed an interest last year that came to nought.

Our take: I think it’s unlikely that United will sell one of their brightest youngsters. But I guess you just never know.

Either way, it’s nice to see Jose thinks fondly of one of the aspects of United’s “football heritage”.

Barcelona keen on Cavani

According to Madrid-based outlet Marca , Barcelona have not finished their Manchester shopping and want to add Edinson Cavani to the imminent signing of City forward Ferran Torres.

Recently installed head coach Xavi is wasting no time in launching a rebuild at Camp Nou.

But outgoings will also be required in order to balance the books and make any move for Cavani financially viable.

Our take: Cavani is not playing much football at United but, even at the age of 34, he appears to have plenty to offer within Ralf Rangnick’s playing style.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star had to be persuaded against a move to Boca Juniors by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and hopefully Rangnick has a similar way with words.

Newcastle to rival United for Boubacar Kamara

Newcastle United are looking to challenge United for Marseille midfielder Boubacar Kamara.

The 22-year-old will be a free agent in the summer if he doesn’t sign a new deal with the Ligue 1 side.

Boubacar Kamara is making terrific progress at Marseille.
Boubacar Kamara is making terrific progress at Marseille.

Kamara is reported by The Express to have held lengthy talks over a contract extension at Marseille but a failure to agree terms means a January exit is now coming sharply into focus.

Our take: Kamara also has Chelsea keeping an eye on him. He’s definitely not short of options, but now it’s up to Rangnick and United to persuade him that Old Trafford is the place to be.
