Erik ten Hag has been tipped to replicate Man City’s Pep Guardiola at Manchester United.

Ten Hag was officially announced by United as their new manager on Thursday. The Dutchman has signed a three-year deal at Old Trafford and will join at the end of the campaign.

Should they wish to, there is an option to extend his contract by a further year. Excitement is now growing around the United fanbase, with many wondering how he will approach his new job.

According to his fellow countryman Ronald de Boer, Ten Hag is likely to replicate the methods of Guardiola to try and achieve success in Manchester. De Boer told talkSPORT: “He will want to control everything from the training ground to everything around the club.

“He is very much involved in everything. What Manchester United also does with City, we normally see in England a manager look from above and not really on the pitch, but he is going to be on the pitch like Guardiola. He is really like a coach. He will want to set his style and ideas on the pitch.”

De Boer also revealed that there is scepticism in the Netherlands as to whether United is the right job for the promising manager. He added: “In Holland [the view is], is this the right time to go to Manchester United?

“It looks like you are jumping on a sinking ship. You know how it goes in football. You are always thinking ahead and the train passes by one time and you have to step off as you think you may not get another chance.

“That is the choice he had to make. Manchester United is an unbelievably big club.

“I think he’s a great coach. Of course, he doesn’t have the experience of the Premier League or a club of the magnitude of Manchester United with players like [Cristiano] Ronaldo.

“He’s quite a down to earth guy and he can handle that.” De Boer then finished by previewing for United fans how Ten Hag is likely to approach football at Old Trafford.

“I think you always have to look at the team you are at and what type of players, we call it weapons, you have,” he explained. “If you have two great strikers then you play with them if they combine well, or two great wingers then you play with wingers.

“For me, that’s the most important. The intensity is to have high pressure on the ball and put pressure on the last line of defence and from there create chances.

“It will be offensive, that’s for sure, as that’s what he learned as a second coach at Bayern Munich and with Ajax. I don’t think he’s going to change suddenly with five at the back.”
