WAYNE ROONEY has urged Manchester United to forget about the top four as they aren’t good enough to compete in the Champions League.

The Red Devils legend has declared that the club need to focus on the future and rebuild the squad, which could take three years.

United dropped further ground in the race to finish in the top four on Saturday after drawing 1-1 against Leicester at Old Trafford.

And they are in danger of even missing out on the Europa League for next campaign as they sit seventh in the Premier League table.

With Ralf Rangnick’s side to face Everton, Norwich, Liverpool and Arsenal in their next four games, United know they cannot afford to drop more points.

But Rooney believes it would be beneficial for United to miss out on a Champions League spot and instead look ahead to the future.

Speaking on Monday Night Football, Rooney said: “I think for Manchester United not to be challenging, I think they’d want the season to be stopped now, if it could.

“Forget about the Champions League, they’re not going to compete next year if they qualify for it.

“I think they have to rebuild.

“Rebuild the squad, rebuild everything around the first team, around the club to make sure they put themselves in a position for in three years time, they can actually challenge again for the Premier League.”

And Rooney has had his say on who he wants to charge of United in the summer, with the Derby gaffer preferring Mauricio Pochettino over Erik ten Hag.

He remarked: “I think Pochettino has done it in the Premier League; he knows the Premier League.

“At Tottenham, he brought a lot of young players through; at Southampton as well [he] brought a lot of young players through.

“If I’m choosing from one of them two, that’s who I’d choose. I’d go with Pochettino and give him time.”

Before adding: “For managers now, they need time to come in and actually put their blueprint on the club and on the team.

“And if you give him time, I think he’ll do well.”
