Man City ‘set to battle for Dortmund star’ as Neville compares Liverpool man to De Bruyne

Welcome to the latest edition of the City is Ours daily digest.

All thoughts are now firmly on City’s Champions League opener against RB Leipzig but, as we nervously count down to kick-off on Wednesday, here are some of the City-related reports that you might have missed this morning.

Hey Jude

The rise of Jude Bellingham has been nothing short of stratospheric. Since he left Birmingham City for Borussia Dortmund last summer aged just 17, the midfielder has gone from strength to strength.

After staring for Dortmund in the Bundesliga and causing City lots of problems in the Champions League, he was selected for England’s Euro 2020 squad. Now, City apparently want to take him to the next level.

Pep Guardiola’s is reportedly interested in bringing the young gem to the Etihad Stadium, although the Blues could face stiff competition from Liverpool.

According to Bild, Dortmund would not be willing to let Bellingham go for less than 100million, roughly £85m. If City enter a bidding war with their Premier League rivals, it will be interesting to see if Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp’s relationship with Dortmund pays dividends.

Kevin De Bruyne > TAA

Let’s get one thing straight: Comparing anybody to Kevin De Bruyne is just straight-up sacrilege. It simply shouldn’t be done.

However, that’s exactly what former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has done.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Neville compared Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold to the 2019/20 PFA Player of the Year.

Kevin de Bruyne with the PFA Player of the Year award

On the subject of TAA pushing so high up the pitch that he’s practically playing in a right-sided number eight role, Neville likened the 22-year-old’s abilities to those of De Bruyne.

“He’s the best passer of a ball I’ve ever seen from full-back”, he said. “He is David Beckham and Kevin De Bruyne at right-back, it is unbelievable what he does.”

We admit that Alexander-Arnold is a wonderful talent, but until he racks up 20 assists in a single Premier League season, you can leave King Kev out of the conversation.

Leroy returns?

Many City fans were disappointed with how Leroy Sane’s time in Manchester came to an end, but according to the latest reports, the Germany winger could be set for a Premier League return.

However, if he does then he won’t be wearing sky-blue.

According to Eurosport, City’s title rivals Chelsea are considering a swap deal involving Timo Werner joining Bayern Munich and Sane moving the other way.

Sane has struggled for form and fitness since joining the Bundesliga champions a year ago, although he has improved so far this season under new coach Julian Nagelsmann.

City fans know just how good the attacker can be on his day, given that in 135 City appearances he was directly involved in 84 goals.

If a move does come off, it will be interesting to see what kind of reception he receives on returning to the Etihad Stadium.
