London Underground: Londoners react to ‘ball ache’ Northern line closure and the comments are painful
Londoners have woken up to the closure of the Northern line today, with many sharing their frustrations about the ‘ball ache’ online.
The planned works are set to take four months, meaning one of the capital’s busiest stretches of the London Underground between Kennington and Moorgate will be closed until mid-May.
It means the Tube will not serve Elephant and Castle, Borough, Bank and London Bridge stations.

Transport for London (TfL) said the closure would allow new tunnels to be connected and the completion of a new southbound platform at Bank.
Despite months of warnings from TfL, many people were still caught off-guard as they tried to enjoy their Saturday morning – and you could really feel the pain on social media.
One poor worker described how she had taken a job without realising about the changes.
She said: “I feel this. Just starting a new Saturday job which I accepted not knowing that the Northern Line branch my commute relies on was about to go out of service for at least 4 months.”
Others were just annoyed by the inevitable changes needed for their journeys.
One student said: “Northern Line closed until mid-May. That’s gonna add an extra 30 minutes and a lot more walking to my commute to university – ugh.”
While another added: “Honestly the fact that the Northern Line is partially closed is gonna be a bloody ball ache at some point I can see it now.”
Others felt the closures had ‘ruined’ their lives, with one saying “The Northern Line closures are already ruining my life”, while another added: “Half of Northern Line being closed till mid-May has ruined my life.”
Others were more positive about the work, with one user commenting on the planned improved accessibility for congested platforms.
They added: “The Northern Line platforms at Bank were TINY, which really isn’t good for a station that busy. I think this upgrade is going to double the width of them, so it’s less congested in peak times. Also, I think there’s going to be a travellator too!”
