Latin Academy hits it out of the park against O’Bryant

BOSTON — In the sixth Thanksgiving Day meeting between Latin Academy and O’Bryant, the Dragons got the best on both sides of the ball at historic Fenway Park.

Latin Academy received three total touchdowns from senior captain Bailey Belony and a rushing score from senior captain Xavier Polanco to defeat O’Bryant 32-6 Tuesday evening.

“When we are healthy, we can play with anybody,” said Dragons’ coach Rocco Zizza about the second straight victory over the Tigers. “We got a little bit healthier right at the end.”

Belony came up huge on both sides of the ball in the first half. He started off by completing his first two passes for scores. His first went to senior Matt Nguyen from 25 yards out to make it 8-0 after a Belony rush. The second came on the Dragons second drive as Belony found senior Brennan Shapiro for a 19-yard score as Latin Academy (7-4) led 16-0 after one.

“It was one last ride for me,” Belony said about playing well in his final high school contest. “I just had to go out and do what I knew I could — try my best and give everything I had.”

Belony added an interception with 5:48 left in the first half. Five plays later Polanco (12 carries, 63 yards) ran it up the gut for a 10-yard score as the Dragons led 24-0 at the half.

“Not many people get the opportunity to play at Fenway. We are truly blessed to have this opportunity and we showed it today,” Polanco said.

The Latin Academy defense stifled the O’Bryant offense for most of the contest while allowing just two first downs and six total yards of offense through the first 24 minutes of action and just 40 total yards through three quarters of game play.

“We were fired up,” said Belony about the defense’s play. “We worked as a unit. Everyone was bringing energy that they had to. We covered our responsibilities and filled our gaps and (O’Bryant) couldn’t do anything about it.”

The Dragons recovered a fumble late in the third quarter and Belony ran it two straight plays to score from nine yards out to build a 32-0 lead after a two-point pass to senior Owen O’Neill.

O’Bryant (4-5) scored in the fourth during running time as junior Montavius Zollercoffer rushed it in from one yard out after completing a 31-yard pass to Isaiah George to complete the scoring 32-6.
