John Deere Classic picks and odds: Adam Hadwin and Nick Hardy are strong plays

0

The PGA Tour returns to the Quad Cities for the John Deere Classic beginning June 30.

The pre-tournament narrative: With two weeks until The Open we’ve hit a slight lull in the tour’s schedule as none of the OWGR’s top 30 players are in the field. That being said, Adam Hadwin (+1,600) leads a strong Canadian contingent of seven players at TPC Deere Run.

Here are our best John Deere Classic picks.

John Deere Classic picks overview

  • Hadwin top-20 finish (+110)
  • Nick Hardy top-20 finish (+170), to win (+3,000)
  • Patrick Rodgers top-20 finish (+170)

John Deere Classic picks

Best bet: Hadwin top-20 finish (+110)

Hadwin has been enjoying one of his best seasons on tour to date.

The 34-year-old has banked five top-10 finishes, tied for his most ever in a season, including a T7 at the U.S. Open, his best major finish to date.

It’s rare to see Hadwin so high up the odds leaderboard but consider it a compliment to how well he’s played this year and at TPC Deere Run in the past.

Hadwin has competed in the John Deere twice, with favourable results, finishing T8 in 2016 and T18 in 2015. This course certainly seems to fit his eye, as it demands driving accuracy over distance, which suits his game well.

The Canadian has also emerged as one of the best short game players on tour and has gained strokes around the green in 11 straight events. He had the fifth-best strokes gained ARG of anyone in the U.S. Open and was draining putts from all over Brookline.

While all of Canada would like to see Hadwin win, the Moose Jaw native has just one PGA victory, the 2017 Valspar Championship, so we’re going to roll with the safer, top 20 play.

Key stat: Hadwin has finished in the top 20 in five of his last 10 starts.

Quick picks

Hardy top-20 finish (+170), to win (+3,000): Hardy is on an incredible stretch of form since finishing runner-up at the NV5 invitational on the Korn Ferry Tour. The 26-year-old carded a T14 at the U.S. Open and followed that up with a T8 at the Travelers last week.

He’s averaged the second-most strokes gained out of anyone in the field over the last 20 rounds (+1.26), per DataGolf. With an underwhelming field, we like Hardy to card his third top 20 on Tour this year and believe he’s worth a sprinkle to secure a breakout victory at +3,000.

Rodgers top-20 finish (+170): Rodgers has four top-20 finishes this year and boasts a stat profile that suits TPC Deere Run. The 29-year-old is an extremely accurate driver and has posted positive strokes gained off the tee in six straight events.

Rodgers also has been great with the flat stick, hitting 89.51% of all putts within 10 feet this season.

Canadians at the John Deere Classic
