SANTA CLARA — Intel has revealed plans for deeper employment reductions with a fresh round of job cuts that will affect hundreds of Bay Area workers, a disquieting sign that the tech sector’s layoffs have yet to run their course.

The tech titan is eyeing the elimination of about 200 jobs in Santa Clara, according to an official filing posted by the state Employment Development Department on its public site.

Intel had previously told the EDD in a WARN letter dated Dec. 2, 2022 that it was anticipating at that time that it would be cutting 90 jobs in Santa Clara.

The latest information provided by the EDD on its public site shows that number has more than doubled and that Intel now plans to eliminate 201 jobs.

The Intel layoffs in Santa Clara are scheduled to be completed by Jan. 31, the WARN notice shows.

Separately, Intel is eyeing the elimination of 343 jobs in the Sacramento County city of Folsom.

This means that all told, Intel intends to jettison well over 500 jobs in Northern California.

Intel had previously estimated that 90 jobs would be lost at its main headquarters complex in Santa Clara over a 30-day period from Jan. 31 through Feb. 28 of this year.

“We now anticipate that the number of Mission Campus employees scheduled to terminate during this period has increased to 201,” Marc Nadler, director of corporate people movement with Intel wrote in a WARN letter to the EDD dated Jan. 11.

All of the impacted employees in Santa Clara and Folsom have received 60 days’ notice that their jobs were being eliminated, the company stated.

With the latest crop of filings, at least 15 tech or biotech companies have revealed plans to eliminate 200 or more jobs on or after Oct. 1 of 2022. These are the 15 companies and the number of jobs they have eliminated or decided to cut in the Bay Area, according to the EDD’s public website and WARN letters reviewed by this news organization.
