YOU will need to buckle up – and grip someone’s hand – on the new spine-tingling ride at Alton Towers Resort.

Theme park season got off to a spooktacular start this week with the long-anticipated launch of The Curse At Alton Manor.

I was one of the first to brave the immersive experience when the Resort opened its doors last week — and luckily lived to tell the tale.

The Curse At Alton Manor replaces previous incarnations Duel and The Haunted House Strikes Back.

This time the ghostly horrors are re-imagined using state-of-the-art 3D projection mapping technology to take you on a twisted tour inside the demonic mind of young Victorian, Emily Alton.

We got goosebumps as we joined the queue, snaking through the haunted graveyard strewn with humorous gravestones and macabre porcelain dolls.

On entering the Manor, spectacular visual effects re-enacted the fateful night Emily’s neglectful, socialite parents disappear, leaving their daughter behind to haunt the property forever.

We were then taken on a terrifying six-minute journey of twists and turns through a cursed crypt. Travelling past dancing ghouls in the Grand Hall, we were spirited inside Emily’s doll house before finding ourselves abandoned alone with her in the attic.

All the while cackling crones and creepy music filled our ears.

Freakishly fun

There is so much intricate detail and referencing that it is easy to miss some of the storyline the first time round, so I highly recommend a second — or even third — go to make the most of the creepy experience.

Watch out for the malevolent mirrors too, which spring spooky surprises. Then there is Emily’s demonic dolls workshop, which is a particularly nightmarish creation with a gruesome operating table and human-sized dolls dangling above your heads.

The Curse is aimed at anyone aged seven and over, but obviously that depends on how shock-proof your young ghoul-getters are.

And if you are visiting with little-uns, there is still plenty of fun to be had with a good old-fashioned ghost train.

For those wanting to extend their visit, Alton Towers Resort offers staycation packages with five themed hotels and accommodation options to choose from.

I stayed at the original Alton Towers Hotel, which is in an ideal location, only a seven-minute walk to the park entrance so you really can make the most of your stay.

With themed rooms, a fabulous bar, restaurant and spa, the fun doesn’t stop at the rides.

If The Curse At Alton Manor ride isn’t enough to get your heart racing, the theme park is home to world-famous rollercoasters.

My top five unmissable attractions were the bone-rattling Wicker Man, sensational The Smiler, jaw-dropping Oblivion, gut-wrenching Galactica and lightning pace Rita.

Other exciting new additions to The Retro Squad is the Twistatron, promising twists and turns galore when it opens later this spring.

Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, the award-winning Scarefest and Fireworks Spectacular will also return as well as the rollercoaster dedicated Festival of Thrills, back for its second year with an exciting The Smiler-themed takeover.

Just make sure to bring your game face as with young Emily now haunting the park and a series of chilling events on the calendar, this year looks set to be the spookiest yet.
