Game 7 Penguins vs. Rangers picks: Back New York to get it done at MSG

0

The Pittsburgh Penguins head to the Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers in a winner-take-all Game 7 on May 15.

The pregame narrative: The Rangers have clawed their way back from a 3-1 series deficit to force a Game 7 at the world’s most famous arena. Pittsburgh is looking to advance to the second round for the first time since 2018. Sidney Crosby is a game-time decision after missing the majority of Game 5 and all of Game 6 with a concussion.

Here are our best Penguins vs. Rangers picks for Game 7 at Madison Square Garden.

Penguins vs. Rangers picks overview

  • Rangers moneyline (-132)
  • Over 6 goals scored (-120)
  • Alexis Lafreniere anytime goalscorer (+310)

Penguins vs. Rangers picks

Best bet: Rangers ML (-132)

The Rangers have all the momentum here and will be hungry to advance to the second round for the first time since 2017.

Hart Trophy candidate and likely Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin has steadied the ship over the past two games — both 5-3 victories — but still has yet to reach his ceiling.

The 26-year-old had a .940 save percentage and 1.85 GAA at home this season. Don’t count on him returning quite to that form but expect a big game from the Russian.

The true wildcard in this game will be Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry, who is also a game-time call. He hasn’t been in the crease for over a month due to a foot injury.

Jarry had a solid regular season, posting a .919 save percentage and 2.42 GAA in 56 games. Even if he plays and finds some of that regular-season form, he could still be in trouble against the Rangers.

The netminder is 2-5 in the playoffs during his career with an .894 save percentage. He has allowed 22 goals in just seven games and was a liability handling the puck against the New York Islanders last season.

With shaky playoff numbers to begin with, don’t expect Jarry to magically have a game after missing more than a month of hockey.

Key stat: The home team has won four of the six games in this series.

Quick picks

Over 6 goals (-120): Every game in this series has eclipsed the six-goal mark — expect that trend to continue today. There has been an average of 8.3 goals per game scored this series, which slightly dips to 7.3 at MSG.

Shesterkin has had a tough go these playoffs. His GAA has risen to 3.82 from his league-leading 2.07 in the regular season. With him not playing his best and Jarry potentially coming into the series cold, there should be a lot of offence.

Lafreniere anytime goalscorer (+310): Game 7 is a great way to etch one’s name in stone and there’s no bigger stage for the former No. 1 overall pick to do it than MSG. Lafreniere has scored two goals in his last three games and is beginning to get in the groove of playoff hockey.

Pittsburgh’s focus will be on shutting down the likes of Artemi Panarin, Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad, so betting Lafreniere to score at large plus-money odds is a strong play.
