Doomben: Tiffani Brooker celebrates first Saturday metro winner since beating her battle with drugs

After recently sharing her inspiring comeback from a drug addiction, jockey Tiffani Brooker had a win to cherish at Doomben on Saturday.

Jockey Tiffani Brooker recently shared her amazing comeback story and her journey back from the brink hit a new peak at Doomben as she rode her first Saturday metropolitan winner since returning to the saddle.

Brooker bravely bared her soul in a story with News Corp on the eve of last month’s Gold Coast Magic Millions when she revealed how she beat an addiction to crystal meth and other drugs including cocaine.

The life spiral of the former champion Brisbane apprentice started when she had a fall at Caloundra in 2018, leaving her with severe back and neck problems.

But those dark days of drugs and despair – which including a ban from racing for nine months – seemed a world away at Doomben on Saturday when well-backed two-year-old Jemeldi showed toughness and fight to take out the QTIS 2YO Handicap.

“That is my first Saturday metro winner in a very long time – certainly the first since I’ve been back riding,” Brooker said.

“It brings back some good memories because I won the metropolitan premiership as an apprentice, years ago.

“This horse can’t do more than he has done, two starts, two wins. He has obviously got a very bright future.

“He is such a casual horse at trackwork, he only does what you ask him to do but every time you ask him to do something he finds.”

Scratchings reduced the field for the two-year-old race to six starters but punters zeroed in on Tom Button-trained Jemeldi who was coming off a debut win on his home Sunshine Coast track last month.

Backed in from $3.70 to $2.90, Jemeldi was given no peace and was taken on in the run but the son of Winning Rupert showed a great will to win.

“He’s a very nice little horse, he had to do it tough early and had to work from the barrier and then Tony Gollan’s horse ($2.50 favourite Spiritualised) came at him, but when they come he finds,” Button said.

“He found plenty at the Sunshine Coast and he did it again today, he’s just a little winner.

“I thought in the race today, gee he has done it tough, and Tony’s horse looked to be travelling well on the corner but at the furlong I could see my horse was in for the fight.

“On the line, he drew away.”

Button said he would play it by ear before deciding whether Jemeldi would now have a break or was set for one more run this campaign.
