Daryl Clark ready to push England World Cup hopes – by helping beat them

DARYL Clark believes he has the perfect opportunity to show he can still make England’s World Cup squad – by beating them!

The Warrington hooker insists he is not surprised he missed out on Shaun Wane’s national squad for Saturday’s clash against the Combined Nations All Stars.

But once Ellery Hanley called with the chance to represent his Scottish Heritage – his grandparents were born north of the border – he leapt at the chance to show he can still make the Autumn’s tournament.

Clark said: “My form’s not been too great, so I wasn’t too surprised about not being in the England squad.

“It’s no surprise, my form’s not been where I want it to be. I know I’ve got a lot of improvement to do this year and hopefully I can show that.

“There’s time left before the World Cup and my goal is to turn my form around at Warrington and be in the frame.

“I spoke to Shaun Wane on Monday and I wasn’t in his plans for this week, so Ellery gave me the opportunity to play an international game and show what I can do.

“Ellery was very keen for me to play. I told him my situation, that I want to be in that World Cup squad at the end of the season.

“He thought it would be a good opportunity to play at an international level, hopefully play well and put myself back in the picture.

“The plan is to show Shaun what I can do. This is the only international fixture over here this year. I may be on the opposite side but it’s still an international game and a chance to prove myself at that level.”

Clark has showed glimpses of his class in a terrible season for Warrington so far and the 29-year-old admits it is good to get away from the club game, even though the game is at the Wolves’ home.

He will face Michael McIlorum in his first appearance for his birthplace for nine years, while Paul McShane is also in.

There is also James Roby, if he ends his international retirement, injured NRL star Josh Hodgson, Wigan’s Sam Powell and Leeds’ Kruise Leeming – who is also in the All Stars’ squad.

But the riches Wane has to pick from in the number nine role only pushes Clark on.

He added: “It was a surprise seeing Micky picked because he wasn’t in the squad originally but it wasn’t a surprise given his form.

“Catalans have been playing well for the last couple of years and he’s been a big part of that.

“Micky’s playing some good stuff at the minute but it’s not good for me! It’s another nine fighting for that same position.

“It’s always good to keep you on your toes when there’s more competition for your position. It’s unfortunate for me that there are so many good number nines knocking about for England at the minute.

“But competition is always good as it means I’ve got to be at the top of my game if I want to be involved – I accept it with open arms.”
