‘Carbon copy’ of Tom Brady

Brett Favre is sold on the Mac Jones era in New England.

Earlier this week, the Packers legend drew comparisons between Tom Brady and the rookie quarterback, who has led the Patriots to six straight wins and a seat at the top of the AFC East.

“The way he plays, being ready to play instantly and not making mistakes, really, sort of a young carbon copy of Tom Brady,” Favre, a three-time NFL MVP quarterback, said on his SiriusXM Radio show, via ESPN.com.

“And it’s obviously way premature to say he is the next Tom Brady, but he plays a lot like him. He’s an intellectual player, is not going to beat you with his feet, but his mind and his arm and his pocket presence. He has all those tools.”

Jones, who the Patriots selected with the 15th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft,  has completed 65 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns and two interceptions during New England’s win streak.

“It’s premature to crown anyone, a team or player at this point in the season,” Favre said, praising New England’s overall play and coaching. “But, I mean obviously coach [Bill] Belichick and [offensive coordinator] Josh McDaniels and the organization chose Mac Jones for a reason.”

Following a slow start to the season, when the Patriots went 1-4, the Alabama product is leading his fellow rookie quarterbacks in passing yards (2,850) and passer rating (97.1). He has 16 touchdowns in 12 games this season.

The comparisons may be inevitable, given the bullish start to Jones’ career with the franchise that Brady led to six Super Bowl championships, while winning three NFL MVPs.

Brady didn’t seem fazed when asked about the rookie quarterback earlier in the season.

“I haven’t seen him much at all,” Brady said in late September. At the time, Jones had only played three NFL games.

Brady’s comment came ahead of the Patriots-Buccaneers matchup in October — his first time playing his former team since leaving for Tampa Bay in March 2020.

Jones finished that 19-17 defeat by completing 31 of 40 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns.

Jones was named the starter in New England ahead of the season, after a quarterback battle with Cam Newton. The 2015 MVP was released by the Patriots in August and returned to the Panthers last month on a one-year contract.

The 6-foot-3, 217-pound Jones signed a four-year, $15.58 million guaranteed rookie contract in July.

The Patriots (8-4) visit the Bills (7-4) for an AFC East showdown on Sunday, before their bye in Week 14.
