Bruno Fernandes laughed off the suggestion he and Cristiano Ronaldo are incompatible after the Portuguese duo starred in Saturday’s 4-1 win over Newcastle at Old Trafford.

The Reds continued their fine start to the new season with returning hero Ronaldo scoring twice, either side of Javier Manquilo’s shock equaliser, before Fernandes and Jesse Lingaard put the icing on the cake late on.

Former Sporting Lisbon captain Fernandes instantly assumed the mantle of United’s talisman following his move to the Premier League, but the arrival of his international teammate had led some to question whether his influence would wane.

The 27-year-old was left firmly in Ronaldo’s shadows during a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign, but the pair dovetailed effectively during an another impressive victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s emerging side.

‘Of course, that was never in doubt,’ said Fernandes when asked if the win over Newcastle proved he and Ronaldo could play together.

‘Good players can be put together and always play well. Some days you can play well, some other days no. But it is not because one is closing the space of another. It’s because football is like that sometimes.

‘Everyone knows what Cristiano Ronaldo brought for the club and we are really happy to have him. The most important, as he will say, is the result for the team. Good players can always play well together.

‘We arrived at the end (of last season) with some mistakes but did really well. There has been an improvement in the club and now it is time to take the next step.”

On the overall performance, Fernandes added: ‘It was almost perfect if we did not concede. We are really happy and the performance in general was really good.

‘Newcastle are really organised, defend well but we moved the ball quick and waited for the right moment to hit them.’
