A British man was killed in the USA by a stray bullet that hit him as he lay in bed.
Dr Mathew Wilson, 31, had gone to Georgia to visit friends when he sadly lost his life in the tragic incident.
According to local police in Brookhaven, the astrophysicist from Surrey was hit with a bullet from a ‘recklessly’ discharged weapon that was shot into his apartment from a different building.

As reported in the Mirror, Dr Wilson died due to the gunshot wound on Sunday (January 16).
The Surrey native was with his girlfriend when the incident occurred. Sgt Jake Kissel, from Brookhaven Police, told BBC Radio Surrey that officers arrived at the scene to find Mr Willson’s girlfriend giving him first aid but he died at the scene.
Police have said they do not believe that the doctor from Chertsey was not purposely targeted.
They said that the group next door to his building had “recklessly” discharged the weapon.
Tributes have been paid to Mr Willson from his alma mater, the University of Exeter.
A spokesperson for the university said in a statement: “Matthew Willson was a former PhD student at the University of Exeter and much-loved member of our astrophysics team.
“We have been informed about his tragic death in the US and our hearts go out to his family, friends and colleagues. We are offering support to colleagues at the University who will also want to commemorate his life.”
Officers in the area received multiple calls at around 2am reporting gunfire, according to 11Alive News.
Once the police reached the Clairmont Road apartment, they found the 31-year-old doctor with a single gunshot wound in his head.
He was taken to the local hospital where he tragically died from his injuries.
As it stands, police have said that no suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting.
They said that it appears Wilson was shot random and accidentally.
Officers said: “This incident appears to be a random act involving individuals participating in the reckless discharge of a firearm which led to the tragic death of Mr. Wilson.
“[He] was in town from England visiting loved ones when the incident occurred.”
Brookhaven police have asked for the public’s help to find the person responsible.
A foreign office spokesperson said: “We are supporting family of [a] British man following his death in the USA, and are in contact with US authorities”.
