Blue Jays vs. Orioles prop picks: Back Mitch White in his final start of the season

0

The Toronto Blue Jays have clinched the No. 1 wild-card seed but have two more games to wrap up against the Baltimore Orioles before the real fun begins.

The pregame narrative: Mitch White has struggled in a Jays uniform but should have a long leash in a meaningless game. Baltimore’s Adley Rutschman and Ryan Mountcastle are in a position to pad their stats toward the end of the season.

Check out our Blue Jays vs. Orioles prop picks for October 4.

Blue Jays vs. Orioles prop picks

Best Bet : White over 3.5 strikeouts (+112)

We’ve been bearish on White over the past few weeks and for good reason. He has a 7.38 ERA since joining the Jays and an 0-4 record to accompany it.

That said, he takes the bump for a Toronto team that’s already clinched home-field advantage for their upcoming wild-card series. This game has no bearing on the standings, and White will likely have a long leash regardless of how he starts.

John Schneider and the Jays will be keen on resting key bullpen arms so don’t be surprised if White throws somewhere around 85 pitches. That was typically his wheelhouse in July and August when he averaged 88.3 pitches over nine starts.

He’s thrown fewer than 70 pitches in three of his last four starts, with the outlier being a modest 83-pitch outing against Tampa Bay.

White failed to crack this prop in any of those contests. Those outings mattered, though, and Toronto was in no position to risk keeping the floundering righty in those games.

If White can get his pitch count up to around 90, we love our chances of cashing this prop.

Key stat: White’s recorded four or more strikeouts in four of his last five starts with 90-plus pitches thrown.

Quick picks

Rutschman over 1.5 total bases (+155): We think White will rack up four strikeouts but still doubt his abilities to keep the Orioles bats at bay. Rutschman has been enjoying a solid rookie campaign and has a .279 batting average since Sept. 1 with 14 extra-base hits.

Rutschman has faced white on just one occasion, picking up a double and an RBI in two at-bats. The 2019 No. 1 overall pick has cashed this prop in three of his past five games.

Ryan Mountcastle over 1.5 total bases (+160): Mountcastle’s had his fair share of success against the Jays regardless of who’s on the bump.

His six doubles and five home runs against Toronto are the most he’s recorded against any team this season.

Expect Mountcastle to keep that trend going against White, who has a 1.72 WHIP as a Jay.
