Bert Newton’s wife Patti has shared details of their final moments together following the beloved entertainer’s death at the age of 83.

A devastated Patti Newton has spoken for the first time since the death of her beloved husband Bert, revealing she missed being by his bedside when he passed away by only minutes.

The TV legend died on Saturday night while undergoing palliative care at a private clinic in Melbourne after having his leg amputated earlier this year due to a life threatening infection.

Newton was a Logie Hall of Fame inductee, quadruple Gold Logie-winning entertainer and a radio, theatre and television personality and presenter. He is survived by Patti, their children Lauren and Matthew, and their extended family.

A “devastated” Mrs Newton addressed the media from outside their Hawthorn East home on Sunday morning, revealing details of their final moments together.

“It’s very, very devastating. All our hearts are breaking because he was just the most wonderful man,” she said.

“I left at ten past seven, and I was just pulling around to come into my drive and I get the call to say he’d taken his last breath at 7.22pm. So I missed him, but maybe he didn’t want me to be there for his last breath.

“He had such a fabulous attitude. And he gave us so much joy right up to the end.”

The veteran performer — affectionately called Moonface — was a Logie Hall of Fame inductee, quadruple Gold Logie-winning entertainer and a radio, theatre and television personality and presenter.

Newton will be honoured at a state funeral following his death at the age of 83.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews announced the state funeral in a statement on Sunday morning marking the TV icon’s death.

“Bert Newton was an icon, a larrikin and a born entertainer. We have never known TV without Bert – he was there from the beginning,” Mr Andrews said.

“Above all his achievements, he was a family man and his greatest partnership was with his wife of almost 50 years, Patti. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, their children and their grandchildren.

“We will all have an opportunity to honour his memory, his talent and his achievements at a state funeral. Details will be shared in the coming days.”

The star celebrated his 83rd birthday in hospital in July, after suffering complications from his leg amputation in May.

A toe infection four months prior put his condition in a serious category and he was told he could die if drastic action was not taken.

“It got worse … he was seeing doctors and specialists and they couldn’t seem to get it right, it kept on spreading,” entertainment journalist Peter Ford said on radio at the time about the amputation.

“Basically he was told last week, you have a couple of months to live, or if you have your leg amputated, you’ll probably have a few years. So, he agreed to have the leg amputated.”

Tributes have been pouring in since news of Newton’s death was announced last night, including from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who wrote in a statement that there “will never be another like him”.
