Ben Simmons Philadelphia 76ers NBA news: Video of jump shot, internet makes jokes

NBA commentators are cracking gags over a video captured behind the scenes of Ben Simmons working on his jump shot.

A video of Ben Simmons working out in the gym and dropping threes has triggered all the predictable jokes about the Australian’s jump shot woes.

The video shows Simmons on the court with Los Angeles Clippers veteran Rajon Rondo — looking every bit the freakish talent the world expected him to be.

Simmons had an extraordinary shooting meltdown in the NBA playoffs this year during Philadelphia’s series loss to Atlanta in the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

The video was released by Simmons’ trainer Chris Johnson on Tuesday morning and it showed Simmons dropping bombs in a relaxed environment without any defensive pressure — and that is exactly why NBA commentators are taking pot shots at the former No. 1 draft pick.

Simmons has been here before with promising highlight videos of off-season workouts – and it appears Philadelphia fans aren’t ready to get their hopes up after being burned before.

The 25-year-old is working out while he faces an uncertain future amid reports he has cut off communication with his 76ers team and has been linked by reports with trade discussions with several teams, including Sacramento and as trade bait for the Sixers’ pursuit of Damian Lillard.

With all that going on, Simmons appears to be in the gym working hard after skipping Australia’s bronze medal-winning campaign at the Tokyo Olympics to work on his own game.

The teaser clip shows promising signs – but the NBA community appears to have reacted with scepticism.

NBC Philadelphia published a story Tuesday morning with the headline: “Sixers fans crush Simmons for latest workout shooting video”.

Other NBA commentators were far less kind.

Perhaps the most notable thing in the video is that Simmons is continuing to shoot with his left hand when he is a natural right-hander.

Simmons finishes at the rim with his right, but shoots with an unreliable left-handed jump shot.

It comes at a time when Sixers fans continues to hold a lingering grudge about how Simmons’ season ended.

NBC Philadelphia’s Adam Hermann summed it up.

He wrote: “Given the context of Sixers fans’ feelings about Simmons after the season ended, and given the fact that these videos haven’t led to a single iota of improvement in terms of his jump shot in the last three years?

“Someone should’ve told Simmons, or Johnson, to keep this one in the camera roll instead of launching it out onto social media.”
