Emeli Sandé is best known for her soaring voice, and bringing some of the most moving songs to our ears over the past decade.

She first shot to fame in 2012 with her album Our Version of Events, followed by Long Live the Angels in 2016 and Real Life in 2019.

The singer-songwriter from Scotland recently released her latest single Family, taken from her new album.

But there’s no doubt about where some of her most powerful lyrics come from, as she has endured a lot in her personal life, including a short-lived marriage between 2012 and 2014.

When she announced her engagement in January 2012, there was a huge question mark over who her fiancé was, as he was doing his best to stay out of the spotlight.

It was later revealed that the man Emeli was marrying was Montenegrin marine biologist Adam Gouraguine, who she had been in a relationship with for seven years.

They were married in a ceremony in Kostor, Montenegro, and just days later, Emeli performed for thousands of fans in the town.

Speaking on Montenegrin TV at the time, Emeli said: “I want to be part of his life and his family, so I want to add his surname. I want to be part of his tradition.”

Her husband was believed to have inspired many of her songs, such as My Kind Of Love, which features lyrics such as: “Don’t ever question if my heart beats only for you, it beats only for you.”

But their happiness wasn’t to last, and just two years later Emeli revealed to The Times that they had divorced.

“Everyone thought I’d gone mad”, she said.

“What do you mean a divorce? We were all at your wedding a few months ago!’ But there was just something inside me that said, ‘This isn’t life. You’re pretending to be someone else.'”

Nowadays Emeli is reinventing herself with a new look and a new sound.

In her new music video, she even shows off her newfound dance skills, which went down quite well with her fans.
