aws: AWS launches AWS Local Zone in Delhi, first outside the US

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has launched an AWS Local Zone in New Delhi, the first international zone outside the United States.

AWS Local Zones are a type of infrastructure deployment that place AWS compute, storage, database, and other services near large industry and information technology (IT) centres.

This will allow AWS customers to deliver distributed edge and hybrid cloud use cases that require single-digit millisecond latency to end users in Delhi.

“With this new AWS Local Zone, our customers can choose to run parts of their applications that require single-digit millisecond latency access on the Local Zone in proximity to their end-users, while keeping most of their workloads running in AWS Regions,” said Puneet Chandok, president, commercial business, AWS India and South Asia, AISPL.

AWS also announced a local zone in Taipei, Taiwan and said that it would launch 31 more local zones globally in the next two years, including in Chennai, Bengaluru and Kolkata.

It currently operates 19 local zones.

“Following the launch of the AWS Asia Pacific (Mumbai) Region in 2016, AWS has invested $3.71 billion in local infrastructure and jobs across India. The launch of an AWS Local Zone in Delhi is a continuation of our investment,” Chandok said.

Organizations have traditionally maintained location-sensitive workloads on premise or in managed data centres that need their own IT infrastructure.

The local zone will allow them to deploy latency sensitive workloads on AWS and will support a range of use cases, like trading applications that need to respond quickly to market fluctuations to interactive live events and gaming experiences.

Having AWS Local Zones close to large population centres in metro areas enable customers to achieve the low latency required for use cases like online gaming, live streaming and augmented and virtual reality.

They can also help customers operating in regulated sectors like health care, financial services, and public sector that might have preferences or requirements to keep data within a geographic boundary.

AWS currently operates a region in Mumbai and has another one coming up in Hyderabad.

M2P Fintech, which provides an Application Programming Interface (API) platform for fintech companies, said that fintech businesses must be able to comply with industry regulations, meet local data processing requirements, and architect for disaster recovery.

“Having AWS Local Zones in multiple locations across Asia, including Delhi, brings the AWS Cloud closer to our customers, and makes it easier to operate in these countries,” said Prabhu Rangarajan, co-founder at M2P Fintech. “When there is an AWS Local Zone, we can eliminate the need to run our own data centres and architect for high availability, helping to simplify our operations.”
